REVIEWS

BRAINWASHED.COM: "The spirit of the early days of synth pop pervades the album, but thematically "Who Is Watching the Neighborhood Watchmen?" makes for an update of that classic theme of early industrial: paranoia. As Cabaret Voltaire built some of their legendary albums on the consequences of CCTV surveillance, Ars Phoenix updates it to drones and social media with a subtle nod to the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case in its title... Unlike many in the industrial/synth pop revivalist movement, Ars Phoenix makes no attempt to sound like they are tied specifically to the early 1980s. Their use of drum machines and synths might be in line with those days, but their overall approach is far more contemporary. It balances the familiar and fresh expertly, and results for some extremely catchy songs, the type of record that draws me in over and over again."

THAT'S HOW KIDS DIE: "Sonically, Violent Rain reminds me of Gary Numan circa The Pleasure Principle; all manner of electronic bleeps and bloops are harnessed in order to bring each song into being, bound together by layer upon layer of robotic synths, w/ repetitive electronic beats burbling underneath it all. Ars Phoenix have a keen pop sensibility, utilizing dual male/female vocals to drive hooks in deep, but they also keep things dark, dense and ever-so-slightly menacing... Indeed, each song is expertly crafted, and one can tell instantly that the band spent a great deal of time making sure everything is in its right place. This meticulous approach pays off handsomely for Ars Phoenix, as there isn’t a single dud to be found here... Ars Phoenix have made quite the impression on me with Violent Rain; it’s melancholic, malevolent, paranoid and pretty, sometimes all at once. It’s also likely one of the best albums in this style you’re going to hear in 2014. This moody masterpiece is available on CD, vinyl or as a pay-what-you-want download via Bandcamp. You know what to do."

THE DISTRICT BEAT: "Petrichor: the scent of rain on earth, and the state inhabited by Ars Phoenix’s Violent Rain. The latest from Gainesville, FL’s synthgaze goth lovelies.... it’s a record that takes you somewhere dark and damp and deep, only to awaken you abruptly with a 7-minute spoken finale... It’s dangerous to compare any band to Joy Division, but Ars Phoenix is what Ian Curtis’ band might have sounded like had he had a female backing vocalist on every track, a lot more synthesizers, and a reference to post-rock’s cinematic climaxes. Much of Violent Rain is cold, but not callous; it calls you in out of the drizzle and lets you gaze out on it from behind slightly frosted windowpanes. It’s a dark place but so beautiful you barely notice, barely feel the chill creeping in."

I DIE YOU DIE: "Florida’s Ars Phoenix serve up a soupy blend of darker, fuzzier subgenres on their second full-length, Violent Rain. The record has a solid darkwave foundation, but between contrasting vocal styles from Jon Glover and Caitlin Ollinger and a near-constant shifting of the interplay between guitars and keyboards, it packs a colourbox of shades into its forty minutes. There are plenty of ponderous, gothic unveilings like the procession of “Amethyst”, and the cosmic dread of “Violent Rain”, but shoegazey, post-rock vibes come through on “January 1st” and “Shudder At The Sound.”"

DEATHRAT FANZINE: "With the delicacy of Lycia and the thrill of The March Violets, Ars Phoenix captures and enraptures... If you are looking for a run-of-the-mill DeathRock band, there are plenty of generic acts out there, trying to be the next great Bauhaus. Ars Phoenix is not one of them. They aren't wanna-be's. They are leaders."
